iGEN Volunteers Collect 1359 kg of Waste at Ghajn Tuffieha Beach

On September 17, 2022, the Gaming Industry Association in Malta (iGEN) executed its third environmental cleanup of the year at Ghajn Tuffieha. The event was organized as part of the global World Cleanup Day 2022, which engages millions of volunteers across 191 countries.

Partners and Logistics

The association collaborated with KFS (Koalizzjoni għal Futur Sostenibbli) to coordinate the effort, aiming to exceed the attendance records of previous Earth Day and World Oceans Day events. A total of 85 volunteers participated, representing eleven iGEN member companies including Videoslots, Games Global, Betsson, Raketech, Aspire Global, Trustly, Entain, Glitnor, Suprnation, and GamingMalta. Everymatrix joined via the event page, while KPMG contributed approximately 40 staff members.

Local authorities provided essential infrastructure for the operation. Mgarr Council Executive Secretary Paul Cyprian Dalli allocated a section of the Riviera parking lot as a base camp and arranged transport. The Emergency Fire Rescue Unit (EFRU) supplied ten volunteers, a fire engine, and an ambulance.

Additionally, rangers from Ambjent Malta, led by Gordon Portelli, were present to document the activity and weigh the collected waste for national statistics.

Cleanup Operations and Results

Volunteers focused on roadsides, green areas along the main approach roads, and the area surrounding the Riviera carpark rather than the beach itself. Working in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, teams were equipped with hi-vis vests and luggage scales to weigh bagged waste on-site before transporting it to the ranger weighing station. The operation successfully removed 1359.4 kilograms of trash, contributing data to the Saving Our Blue umbrella organization.
